Servers and accounts
Which mail servers does JMapper work with?
Any server that offers JMAP for mail (RFC 8620 and RFC 8621) and signs users in through OpenID Connect. The identity provider must support Dynamic Client Registration (RFC 7591), PKCE with S256 and RS256-signed ID tokens. JMapper registers itself there on your first sign-in, so nobody has to create a client for it.
Will JMapper support IMAP or password sign-in?
No. JMapper is deliberately built for one modern protocol stack. JMAP lets the app sync quickly and reliably, and OpenID Connect means your password and second factor are only ever entered at your own provider, never in the app.
How do I know whether my provider qualifies?
Ask your provider or administrator whether they offer JMAP with OpenID Connect sign-in. You can also just try: enter your address and choose Discover configuration. If discovery finds a JMAP endpoint and an issuer, you are most of the way there.
Can I try JMapper without an account?
Yes. Choose View Demo – No Account on the sign-in screen. The demo contains sample messages, tags, notes and follow-ups and makes no network connection.
Can I use several accounts?
Yes. Add another sign-in with Add profile / sign in…. Shared and public accounts your server offers appear automatically. The combined Mailboxes section shows the inboxes of all your personal accounts together.
Why does JMapper ask me to sign in again?
Your identity provider decides how long a session lasts. When it ends the session, JMapper shows a banner and waits for you to choose Sign in again. Your local messages and drafts are kept. Network outages never sign you out.
Does JMapper sync calendars or contacts?
No, JMapper is a mail app. It can read the contacts on your device (after you allow it) to complete addresses and mark VIPs.
Privacy and security
What data do you collect?
None about your use of the app: there are no analytics, trackers or ads. Your mail goes directly between your device and your server. The only service we run is the optional push gateway for iPhone and iPad; it stores your device token and subscription address and cannot read the encrypted notifications. Details are in the Datenschutzerklärung (English summary).
Where is my password stored?
Nowhere in JMapper. You enter it only on your provider's sign-in page in the browser. JMapper receives tokens from your provider and keeps them in the device keychain.
Why are images not shown in some messages?
Remote images can tell the sender when and where you opened a message, so JMapper does not load them unless you allow it. Use the image menu in the reader to show embedded images only or to load all images. Your choice applies to all messages until you change it.
Is reading HTML mail safe?
HTML mail is rendered without scripts, forms, frames, external fonts or style sheets, and without any network access of its own. Links ask before they open.
How do I start with OpenPGP?
Open Encryption → OpenPGP & Autocrypt and choose Generate new key, or import your existing key. With Autocrypt enabled, your public key travels along with your mail, so your contacts can answer encrypted. To write encrypted, choose Sign and encrypt in the composer. JMapper looks up missing keys in the Web Key Directory and on keys.openpgp.org.
JMapper says a contact's key changed. What should I do?
A changed key can be harmless (a new device, a renewed key) or a sign of an attack. Confirm the new fingerprint with your contact by another channel, then mark the key as Checked under Known keys.
Does JMapper support S/MIME?
Yes. Import your certificate as .p12 or .pfx and assign it to a sender address. Recipients' certificates are collected from signed mail. JMapper does not check revocation online and tells you so in the message view.
Why does my encrypted mail show “...” as subject?
With Encrypt subject turned on, the real subject is encrypted together with the message, and only “...” is visible on the outside. Recipients with a modern OpenPGP client see the real subject.
Recipients cannot open my encrypted ZIP on a Mac.
The macOS Archive Utility does not support AES-encrypted ZIP files. Recipients can use Keka, The Unarchiver, 7-Zip or WinZip. Send the password through another channel than the mail.
Organizer and iCloud
Where are my tags, notes and follow-ups stored?
On your devices and, if Sync with iCloud is on, in your private iCloud database, end-to-end encrypted. They are never written to your mail server, so other mail apps do not see them.
Can I use the organizer without iCloud?
Yes. Turn off Organize → iCloud → Sync with iCloud. The organizer then stays on that device. You can move data between devices with Backup → Export… and Import….
How does “Only if no reply comes” work?
JMapper checks the conversation for a reply, read-only and at most every ten minutes. If a reply arrives before the due time, the follow-up is completed and you are not reminded.
What is the difference between Rules and Sieve filters?
Rules in Organize run in the app and add tags or projects. Sieve filters run on your mail server, even when your devices are off, and can file, forward, flag or reject messages.
Sending
Undo Send does not appear.
Undo Send and scheduled sending need delayed submission on your server. Without it, JMapper says so in General → Undo Send and messages go out immediately.
Does “accepted” mean the message was delivered?
No. It means your server accepted the message for delivery. JMapper never claims more than it knows, and it never sends a message twice when the outcome is uncertain.
How do I send from an alias?
Add it under Account & sender → Senders & aliases. Your server must allow the address; otherwise it rejects the message and JMapper shows the reason.
Can I send while offline?
Not yet. Drafts are kept, and you can send once you are online again.
Notifications and devices
How do push notifications work?
When you turn on Instant Notifications via Apple Push, JMapper registers with your mail server. The server encrypts each notification for your device (RFC 8291) and sends it via our push gateway to Apple. Neither the gateway nor Apple can read it. If your server does not offer push, background fetch checks for new mail periodically.
Can I hide sender and subject on the Lock Screen?
They are hidden by default. Show sender and subject in Notifications & sounds and Sender and subject in widgets control what is shown.
Why do I get notifications on the Mac only while JMapper runs?
On the Mac, JMapper checks for new mail itself and has no background push. Keep it running, for example by adding it to your login items.
Which languages are available?
English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Polish. Choose one under General → Language or follow the system language.
What does JMapper cost?
JMapper is free, without in-app purchases or ads.
How do I report a bug?
See the support page. A diagnostic log helps a lot and contains no message content or credentials.
